So You Didn’t Get The Job, Now What?

This is not a post about getting dumped and eating your sorrows away in ice cream, this is about how to deal with professional rejection. No matter what you do in life, at some point you will face being told you didn’t get the job. This happened to me recently and I’m not going to lie, it is really hard to hear. It’s that one thought that says you tried your best but it wasn’t good enough, so how do build your confidence back up again and prepare yourself for the next interview.

Don’t Dwell Over Things You Can’t Change

You can drive yourself crazy analysing all the little things you could have done differently or you can simply accept that there is nothing you can do to change things. Looking over the interview is good to a point, because it helps you understand things you could have improved, but don’t go in to all the ‘what ifs’.

Don’t Be Petty

If you get the chance, a simple congratulations goes a long way. Even if you don’t think so at the time, in the long run it will make you feel better that you showed a little class. Plus facing the person that got the job over you will help you except things and move on.

Think Positive

You have to build up you confidence again to put yourself forward for opportunities. Try looking back on some of your best work, focus on your strengths rather than your weaknesses. Another option might be to talk to friends for a little confidence boost.

Ask For Feedback

The most important thing is to look to the future, in this any information you can use is helpful. Some things may be hard to hear and some things you might not have thought of. Plus it shows the interviewer that you are willing to improve and develop, so long term, you have establish a contact and can improve for next time.
